Drabble of Summer #21: Fan
Excitedly the boy bounced on the balls of his feet, waving his giant foam finger as high as his little arm could reach. The crowd roared right along with him watching their players race out onto the field.
“Go Mets!” Peter chanted, pointing with his finger to emphasize the words. “Go Mets! Go Mets!”
To his great surprise his father didn’t scold him. In fact, Peter thought he saw a gleam in the older man’s eyes. Once the game started Peter was lost in the magic of it. His favorite part was the song. He sang it all the way home.
“Take me out to the ball game. Take me out to the crowd. Buy me some peanuts and crackerjacks. I don’t care if I ever get back, ‘cause it’s root, root, root for the home team. If they don’t win it’s a shame. For it’s one, two, three strikes you’re out at the old ball game!”
“Peter.” He stopped, expecting his father to scold him. “Did you like the game?”
“… Yes, sir.”
“Good.” An actual smile flickered on Arthur’s face. “I’ll be sure to take you back.” Peter blinked, stunned beyond words. Right then he decided that baseball was his favorite game ever.
