Writers: Waiting for This
Ace of Pentacles
This is what you’ve been waiting for. That was what Hiro said to him when he appeared in the subway car. Peter didn’t understand what that meant at the time. In fact, he hardly understood anything that was going on. But what he did understand made him believe in everything the strange man from the future told him.
What was it, exactly, Peter was waiting for? This mission from the future to save the world? It seemed that way. Until he went to Odessa and came across something unexpected.
She was such a sweet kid. He liked talking to her, but what really struck him was her smile. It was so sad. What did a sixteen-year-old girl have to be sad about?
This is what you’ve been waiting for. Save the cheerleader, save the world.
“Hey.” The girl turned back. “What’s your name?”
“Peter,” he answered.
“I’m Claire.” There was that sad smile again.
“Are you the one?” Peter asked her. “Saving you, did I save the world?”
“I don’t know. I’m just a cheerleader.”
But that wasn’t true. She was more than just a cheerleader. Before meeting her Peter felt lost. He had no idea what he was supposed to do with his life, who he should be. Then he met Claire and he knew.
Claire stood in the doorway, offering her one of his smiles. It didn’t look quite so sad anymore. Because of Peter. “You’re totally my hero.”
