Mad: Apple of My Eye
"You are the apple of my eye"
He held his breath as he saw the doors of the changing room open. A young woman stepped out, a glittering blue dress shaping her body. Her blonde hair fell down around her shoulders in soft curls. When she moved the dress looked like it was shimmering.
“Daddy?” she called to him in that sweet voice. “What do you think of this one?”
Peter swallowed the lump that was forming his throat but still couldn’t speak. He had insisted on being there when Ally chose a dress for her prom. It wasn’t that he didn’t trust Elle to choose a good dress. It was just that he wanted to be sure teenage boys wouldn’t like it too much.
Now, seeing his little girl looking like a mature woman… He knew there was no dress on the planet that a teenage boy wouldn’t like too much.
“You’re beautiful,” Peter finally managed to croak out. “You’re absolutely beautiful, sweetheart.”
“Really?” Her face lit up in delight. Ally took the hem of her skirt and twirled it back and forth just as she used to when she was young. “You think this is okay?”
“I think it’s perfect,” Peter assured her. He reached out, taking the girl into his arms. He pushed her hair off her forehead before tenderly kissing her there. “Just promise to save a dance for me, okay?”
“Of course!” she chirped happily. She took her hands in his and began to sway gently in place. “There’s always a dance for you.”
Tears formed in Peter’s eyes, but they were the good kind. He swayed with his daughter there in the shopping mall. He hummed her favorite song as they swayed and she rested her head on his chest, humming along with him.
