Justprompt: Leave the light on
Picture Prompt
He was late. Very, very late. When he opened the door he held it in such a way so it wouldn’t squeak. He expected the house to be dark, and that was what he initially met with. Since it was so late Peter was planning on crashing on the couch. But then he noticed a light coming from the bedroom.
Shit. Not only was he late, but she stayed up waiting for him. For a moment he was tempted to go right back out the door but instead he decided to face whatever wrath would come. Taking a deep breath, Peter pushed the door open.
And saw her sitting up in bed casually reading like it was a typical evening. She glanced up from the pages and didn’t react to his presence with anything more than marking her place in the book and setting it on the dresser.
“Hey,” Peter greeted her quietly. “I thought you’d be asleep.”
“I’m not.” Which was rather obvious.
“Yeah.” He ran his fingers through his hair. “Elle, you didn’t have to stay up for me.”
“I didn’t.” Her answers were short and he could tell she was pissed. “Noah isn’t sleeping through the night yet. He keeps me up. You would know that,” she added with definite anger in her tone, “if you were around more.”
“I’m protecting you,” Peter argued. He made that same argument to her before and it still sounded like an excuse. “It’s late,” he sighed. “Let’s not do this now.”
“We never will at this rate,” Elle remarked. He didn’t know what he could say so he turned to go to the couch. “Peter,” she called after him. “I leave the light on and the door open. It’s your choice on what to do with it.”
Peter nodded mutely. He took a position on her couch so he would be able to see her door. He focused on the tiny sliver of light, staying up all night expecting it to go out. It never did.
