Blood rite

The path to the mansion was a very familiar one. Peter used to walk it all the time before meeting Rigby. Once he fell in love with her he decided not to come back; he knew that no one in the family would understand. But of course they found him. Why wouldn’t they, when he was following his human routine? Now he was walking this path again and entering the mansion as if no time had passed.

It was just Raul, Danielle and Caleb tonight. Raul was the one who actually owned the mansion and the rest of the family lived there sporadically. Peter still remembered which room he used while he lived in the mansion. He fully intended to go there now but the smell of fresh blood caught his interest. He followed the scent into the parlor.

A girl was sitting on the floor, trembling silently. She must have been taken when she came off from work: she was still wearing her uniform, though the collar of her shirt had been pulled down to expose her neck. She wasn’t screaming yet but her lower lip was trembling and Peter could smell her fear. He’d forgotten how tantalizing that smell could be.

“Good evening, Peter,” Raul greeted him casually. He was lounging in his favorite chair with a drink in his hand. “I assumed that it’s been a while since you fed last. I hope you don’t mind.”

Peter didn’t give a verbal answer. He crossed the room swiftly, his fangs coming out and sinking into the warm throat. The girl let out a gasp and jerked at the pain but Peter gripped her body so she couldn’t move away. Her blood ran hot and sweet over his tongue and he eagerly sucked it in. This was nothing like animal blood. Animal blood was heavy, thick, sticking in the throat and never quite satisfying. But human blood pulsed with life and heat and was so good.

He drank his fill, becoming less aware of the others watching him. Somewhere in the back of his mind the human in him prodded. Much stronger, though, was the vampire who hadn’t had a decent meal in a long time. When he finally released the girl she crumbled soundlessly to the floor.

Caleb knelt down next to the girl, scrutinizing her still body thoughtfully. He glanced up to meet Peter’s gaze. “She’s dead.”

“There now.” Raul smiled at Peter. “Was that so hard?”
