Sunday: The Real Peter
And the question will be:
When the time comes, do you want to be saved? --Jack Banning
"Here is the contract we discussed, Mr. Petrelli." Adelle slid the piece of paper forward for his inspection. They already went through all the details; this paper was merely a formality. Even so, Peter glanced over it to be sure everything was as Adelle promised.
"Five years," he said when he reached that clause of the agreement.
"That's standard," she assured him. "But I assure you, it will feel like no time has passed at all. When your contract is finished you will be free to live your life as you wish." Peter said nothing, his focus remaining on the contract. Five years was a long time to spend away from his family and friends. Yet he knew he had no other choice.
"What you said before," he began slowly. "About when I become an Active. I won't feel any pain, or sadness, or worry?"
"Exactly." Adelle offered him a gentle smile. "You'll be in peaceful bliss, and your family will be taken care of."
"That's good," Peter sighed in relief. He signed his name on the contract. Adelle took the paper and filed it away. She rose to her feet, Peter moving to do the same. She led him out of the room. Peter paused for a moment when he caught his reflection in the mirror. He paused to take in his appearance, knowing it would be the last time he'd see his true self for a long time.
"Goodbye, Peter," he whispered.
--
His eyes took in the dark room, feeling puzzled. It was always light in the Dollhouse. Desmond woke him up and of course he was happy to see the man, but something about this visit felt wrong.
"Why are you here?" he asked, tilting his head to the side.
"I've come to save you," Desmond answered. He grasped the Doll's hand gently in his own. "I'm going to get you back to your real self, Peter, no matter what."
"I don't understand," the Doll frowned.
"Come with me." Desmond took him by the hand, leading him up the stairs. Peter immediately recognized the path. He stopped, pulling Desmond with him. "What's wrong?" Desmond asked him.
"That's where I go... for my Treatments," Peter answered slowly.
"You don't need that anymore," Desmond told him. He cupped Peter's face in his hands, locking eyes with the Doll. "I'll take care of you." Peter leaned forward a little, nuzzling up against Desmond. When Desmond was around Peter felt safe and happy.
"Everything will be all right now that you're here," he murmured. Desmond brought the Doll's face close enough to kiss. Peter leaned close, holding onto the other man as he fell willingly into the embrace. "I love you, Desmond," he whispered. Something about those words felt so right despite the Doll not understanding what they truly meant.
"I love you too, Peter," the other man returned. A glow came over the Doll's face hearing that. They made him feel... something that was difficult to describe. But it was good. He willingly followed Desmond, knowing nothing could go wrong as long as he was by Desmond's side.
