Any other time when preparing for a trip, Peter would have packed the things he needed. He couldn't do that with this trip. The only thing he could take was himself. Anything else would have risked changing the future.
Peter got the idea for his trip when he finally mastered the ability to move at will through time and space. He was fascinated by history and always wanted to witness the events he read about in books. Now he had the chance to do just that, and there was nothing holding him back. Peter never experienced so much freedom in planning a trip before. He could leave whenever he wanted-- go to any place and time he chose.
A knock on the door temporarily drew him back to the present. He hurried to the door, anxious to be rid of this last visitor and on his way. The last person he expected to see on the other side was Gabriel Gray.
"Hey," Peter greeted him. He was pleased to see his friend, of course. He and Gabriel were spending a lot of time together. Going out to the movies, having coffee, or even just talking on the phone. But even with that, it still raised the question: "What are you doing here?"
"I was thinking about your trip," Gabriel answered. Peter let out a sigh, rubbing his eyes wearily.
"You're not going to scold me on the dangers of time-travel, are you?" Because he'd already listened to the speech before and he wasn't in the mood to hear it again.
"No. I'm sure you know what you're doing." There was a moment of silence and Gabriel stood awkwardly in the doorway. "I was wondering if.... you might let me come along," Gabriel said at last. Peter didn't expect that and it took him a moment to think of a response.
"You want to go with me?" he asked, just to be sure he understood.
"Yes. I love history, and there are so many things I'd love to see for myself. And besides," he added, turning his eyes on Peter. "This sort of trip seems like it would be more fun if you had someone with you." Peter honestly hadn't thought about it, but now that Gabriel brought it up he realized the older man was right. As amazing as living through history could be, it wouldn't be nearly as fun by himself.
And Peter couldn't think of anyone he would want to share it with more than Gabriel.
"Okay," he agreed out loud. "You can come along." Gabriel's lips spread out in a wide grin that Peter couldn't help but match. The next moment found him enveloped in the grateful man's arms. He returned the gesture, letting the embrace linger a moment longer than necessary before pulling back.
"...So." Gabriel cleared his throat. "Where are we going?"
Peter just shook his head and smiled up at his friend. "Does it really matter?"
