"You have absolutely no idea what you're doing, do you?"
The irritated look he shot the other boy was lost in the darkness. But the silence must have been enough to speak for him. Clearly not the right message, though, as he heard Riley chuckling softly.
"I'm a fast learner," Peter insisted defensively.
"Peter, why don't you let me--"
"No." Peter quickly hit Riley's seeking hand away. "I've got it." He knew he was being stubborn about this but he liked to learn on his own. Especially for something like this. Riley clicked his tongue impatiently and though Peter didn't see it, he could guess that the blonde was shaking his head.
"Peter, that's not where your hand goes," Riley said after a while. Peter pressed his lips tightly together to keep himself from saying anything as he corrected his error. "No, no, not like that." Riley reached out to help but this time Peter pulled his hand away.
"Riley, will you just let me do it?" he snapped.
"You're so stubborn," Riley huffed. "We're going to be here all night at this rate." Peter rolled his eyes in response, though of course Riley would be unable to see. He might not know what he was doing but it was embarrassing to have to take direction from someone else.
Silence fell between them. Peter had the vain hope that Riley would leave him to his own devices, and certainly for a few precious seconds he heard nothing from his blonde companion. But then he started moving his hand. Riley made a noise in his throat like he wanted to protest but was holding back.
"What?" Peter demanded, turning his eyes on Riley's general direction.
"It's just... your grip is too loose," Riley told him.
"How can you even see my grip?" Peter asked him irritably. "It's pitch dark."
"It's an educated guess," Riley answered. That caused another roll of Peter's eyes. "Look, if you don't want me to tell you what to do, can I at least fish out a flashlight so you can see what you're doing?"
"No." Peter was starting to get really annoyed now. He couldn't tell for sure if Riley was purposefully being annoying or if he was just being helpful and Peter took it the wrong way. But either way he didn't like knowing Riley thought him inadequate.
"Come on, Peter, let me--"
"No!" Peter had to whack Riley's hand away again. "If you can do this in the dark then so can I."
"Peter..." Riley hesitated, expelling a long sigh. "I didn't get it right the first time in the dark. You have to see what you're doing, trust me." Peter hesitated, debating his options. He could admit Riley was right about one thing: they might be here all night while Peter struggled to get this right.
"Fine," he conceded. "Get a flashlight." He was sure he saw the triumphant smirk on Riley's lips even in the darkness. He would get back at the blonde later. For now he would accept the light Riley shined on him.
"Not bad for a first-timer," Riley commented. "Though you could push a little harder."
"Riley..." The impatient tone in Peter's voice spoke for itself.
"Right, I'm sorry. I'll let you do it." Peter nodded his thanks and went back to work. With the flashlight to help him he had a much easier time. Riley was watching which made Peter a little self-conscious. But he focused on the work and eventually got it done. He pulled back, wiping a hand across his brow.
"There!" He beamed, satisfied with what he accomplished. "Done."
"Good thing I wasn't timing you," Riley teased him. Peter made a face, shoving him harmlessly. "Still can't believe this was your first time."
"It's not like I ever had the chance to do it before," Peter retorted.
"Then congratulations." Riley leaned forward to press a soft kiss on Peter's mouth. "Now I think you should take a shower."
"Fine," Peter agreed. "I never expected changing a tire to be such messy work."
"Live and learn," Riley said with a smile. Peter matched the smile, returning the man's kiss.
"I can't wait to see what else you can teach me."
