"Did it hurt when you fell from Heaven?"
Peter blushed in embarrassment seconds after the words left his mouth. It was stupid but he didn't know what else to say. He didn't even want to be here but Shawn didn't give him much of a choice.
It all started earlier that day. Peter was in their room doing his homework when Shawn came in. Peter gave his roommate a passing glance before going back to his work. Naturally, Shawn didn't let him get away with that. He bounced over to Peter's side, grabbing the other man's notebook and tossing it on the ground.
"What do you want, Shawn?" Peter asked with a sigh.
"I want you to get out of this room, dude. Get back in the saddle." Peter rolled his eyes a little but Shawn persisted. "You need to go on a date, Peter, seriously."
"Shawn, I told you, I want to take a break."
"Bullshit," Shawn snorted. Peter sighed; he was still too hurt by Riley to even think of putting himself out there again. But he wasn't willing to admit that to Shawn. No one even knew Peter was with Riley. It would be pointless to bring that up now. "Peter, will you just go out clubbing for one night? For me? Seeing you here all the time is depressing."
"Fine," Peter agreed, though he probably would've been dragged along either way. He followed Shawn to the club hoping his roommate would be distracted by his girlfriend once they arrived. No such luck. Shawn hovered annoyingly close by and pointed out all the beautiful girls sitting by themselves.
One Peter spotted had dark hair with highlights. She sat at the bar nursing her drink, her leg jiggling in time with the music. Shawn nudged Peter and pointed to the girl meaningfully. Peter waved him off and took a breath before approaching her.
"Hi," he greeted her. She looked around and smiled at him. She was very pretty; Peter found himself staring. "I saw you from across the room and had to come talk to you."
"Really?" Her smile grew wider. "That's so sweet of you."
"I have to ask you something," Peter continued. And before he knew what he was doing, the words came tumbling out: "Did it hurt when you fell from Heaven?" He felt stupid for even saying it but it was too late now. He knew he shouldn't have come out.
"I don't know why you're asking me," the girl answered. "You fell first; I was just following."
"Wh...what?" Peter blinked in surprise; that was the very last thing he ever expected to hear.
"Sorry, I thought it might be fun to throw the line back for once," she said, giggling. "My name is Valerie." Still a bit stunned, Peter took her proffered hand in his own. She had the most amazing green eyes.
"My name is Peter," he told her. He sat down next to her and ordered a drink. They continued exchanging glances with each other for a good few minutes. "By the way," Peter said after a while. "You never answered my question."
"It did a little," Valerie shrugged. "But I'm sure you'll make it worth my while." Peter blinked at her in amazement. He couldn't believe that cheesy pick-up line actually worked. Going out turned out to be a good idea after all.
