"Excuse me, ma'am." Topher's head poked into Adelle's office. "Someone wants to have a word with you."
"What do you mean?" Adelle glanced up from her desk. "I don't have any appointments for today."
"Er... right." The young man ran nervous fingers through his hair. "But see, the thing is... it's an Active." Adelle's eyes went wide and she quickly rose to her feet. "He came right up to me and asked to see you," Topher continued hurriedly.
"Who?" Adelle demanded. "Which Active?"
"Kilo," Topher answered simply. Adelle closed her eyes, taking a deep breath and opening them again. "I'll bring him in," Topher said, and turned to exit the office. A few moments later he was leading Kilo inside. The Active stood looking around the office with vague interest. Topher quietly bowed out again.
"So, Kilo," Adelle began. "I understand you requested to see me."
"Yes," Kilo agreed. "You're the lady who can wake people up." The woman's eyes went very wide as she stared at the Active.
"I beg your pardon?" she said in a whisper.
"I want Quebec to wake up," Kilo continued. "I want him to be Desmond again. I remember Desmond," he went on, talking over Adelle's stumbling words. "I remember a lot of things. If you help Quebec wake up I'll let you take it all away. I'll forget everything. Just please let him go. He doesn't belong here."
Adelle didn't know what to say. She was stunned that one of her Actives would be so aware. Normally such situations would be fixed by a visit to the Attic. But since they tried that before on Kilo with no results, she doubted a second trip would work any better.
"Kilo, will you please go see Topher and ask him to give you a Treatment?" she requested.
"I like my Treatments," the Doll responded pleasantly.
"I certainly hope so," Adelle said with a quirk of her lips. "You'll be getting many more of them."
