What's your favorite family tradition?
Peter ran his fingers carefully over the fake branches to make sure the tree was fully spread out. Plastic trees probably didn't completely fit in with the spirit of the holiday but it was better than killing real trees. Plus it saved the floors from becoming littered with pine needles.
"Daddy!!" Peter turned and watched his daughter rush eagerly into the room. Her brother followed on her heels. The boy looked interested but not nearly as enthusiastic as his sister. "Is the tree ready yet, Daddy?" the girl asked.
"Yes, ma'am," Peter answered. "Hold on just one second, okay?" He headed to the radio and turned it on. Christmas music immediately started playing through the speakers. "Okay, guys," Peter said as he turned back to his children, "grab some ornaments and start hanging."
His daughter let out an eager cheer, clapping her hands gleefully. She eagerly dived into the boxes and started pulling out her favorite ornaments. Peter picked out a few for himself, encouraging his son to join them. Together the three of them started hanging the ornaments. The children could only reach so far so Peter would pick them up to help them reach the higher branches.
Peter started humming along with the music. They were old favorites that he'd known since he was a child. After a while his daughter's voice joined in, and finally his son started humming along too. The hums turned into singing.
"Looks like we're almost done," Peter announced. "All that's left is to put the star on top." He fished it out of the boxes, holding it up to the light. "Who wants to put it up?"
"Can I do it, Daddy?" his daughter asked hopefully. Peter turned to his son but the boy shrugged his shoulders. Peter smiled, holding out the star for both of them at once. His son took one corner and his daughter the other. Peter lifted them so they both put the star on top of the tree.
