He stood with his head bowed, his arms crossed tightly and held close to his chest protectively. He shivered at the cold but made no effort to move. He was too numb to care, and not just from the rain that continued to pound on his soaked body. He closed his eyes, bowing his head under the pressure of the storm.
Everything was going so perfectly for Peter at first. He fell in love with a wonderful girl. But the girl was gone now, leaving only the hole in Peter's heart where she used to be.
The pain was still fresh and raw. He stepped outside needing fresh air and that was when he heard the thunder roll over his head. Rather than take shelter Peter pressed on. The sky turned a murky gray and the first few drops began to fall. Peter stuck his hands in his pockets. He had no clear destination in mind; he just wanted to keep walking.
Now he was completely soaked by the rain. He could feel it pounding on his body, weighing him down. Water streaked down his face to give him tears he refused to shed on his own.
"Peter?" He lifted his head at the voice, pushing his wet hair out of his eyes. He turned to one side, seeing a blonde man standing under the shelter of a building.
"Adam," he breathed out.
"My god, Peter," the immortal said. He was going to say more but before he could Peter was moving toward him. He stood shaking next to Adam, his body dripping on the dry ground. "You must be freezing," Adam murmured in concern.
"Yeah," Peter agreed dully. He trembled, but not from the cold. Without a word he leaned forward against Adam's body. The immortal opened his arms for Peter. He felt warmer the instant Adam's hand touched him.
"What's wrong?" Adam asked him, his fingers combing through the young man's wet hair.
"It hurts," Peter choked out. "Why do they always leave me?" His eyes met with Adam's and tears finally brimmed in his hazel eyes. "I fall in love and they leave," Peter told him shakily. "They always leave."
"Peter, look at me." Adam turned the empath so their eyes met. "I'm right here. You see that? I'm not leaving you. I never will. I swear."
"Never?" Peter repeated. His cold and wet body pressed tightly up against Adam's, needing the comfort and warmth it offered.
"Yes." Adam leaned forward so their foreheads were nestled against each other. "I'll even stand in the rain with you, if that's what it takes."
