“She was pretty cute,” Ryan observed mildly. He and Peter were sitting at Starbucks having a cup of coffee before their next mission. Peter was in his own thoughts and wasn’t paying much attention to his partner. Ryan noticed and nudged the empath with a foot.
“Huh?” Peter glanced up, blinking at the other.
“The girl at the counter,” Ryan clarified. “She was cute, and you gave her a pretty good tip.”
“Oh.” Peter shrugged his shoulders. “She was friendly and she made our coffees fast.” He finished the thought with a sip of his drink. As to her being cute… Maybe before he might have noticed and flirted with her, but not these days.
“Too bad we can’t ask for her number,” Ryan sighed out. “Or I guess I should say I can’t. You’re already spoken for.” He gave the Italian a knowing smirk. That caught Peter by surprise and he flushed in embarrassment.
“I… what?”
“Everyone already knows about it,” Ryan told him, smiling around his cup of coffee. “Not that you two bother to be very discreet.” Peter’s skin was feeling hotter and hotter with every passing second. He tried to be interested in his coffee but he could feel Ryan’s eyes on him, and worse could hear the man’s thoughts echoing.
“I…” Peter swallowed hard, his heart pounding. He had no idea what he could say.
“How long have you been dating anyway?” Ryan asked him.
“We’re not--” Peter covered his face with his hand and let out a weary sigh. “We’re not dating. We’re just--”
“Fucking like rabbits?” Ryan offered with a wider grin. Peter opened his mouth to retort but… Yeah. That was pretty much what was going on. “Not that I judge,” Ryan continued, “but isn’t it usually a bad idea to have a romantic relationship with a co-worker?”
“Probably,” Peter agreed. He knew that it was a bad idea, and that he couldn’t expect anything stable to come out of it. But it was all he had.
“Well…” Ryan checked his watch thoughtfully. “We have a few hours before we have to find our target. You want to squeeze in a booty call?” Peter glared wordlessly at his partner, finishing his drink and depositing the empty cup in the trash.
But deep down, Peter was wondering how Ryan knew exactly how the empath planned to spend those empty hours.
