The man glanced up from his newspaper, arching an eyebrow at his wife. “Hear what?” he demanded. She could be referring to the radio playing softly in their room, or the distant wail of the ambulance sirens.
“I thought I heard the floorboards creaking,” she answered in a hushed tone. Her husband’s eyebrow stayed arched and now a skeptical endearment crossed his face.
“It’s probably just the cat,” he said dismissively, and returned to his paper. His wife wanted to protest but he disappeared behind the sports page and there was no way to pull him out after that. She let out a frustrated sigh, turning to thoughtfully stare at the hardwood floor. She was so sure she heard something but now… maybe she was mistaken, after all.
Out in the hallway Claude finally pulled his hand away from Peter’s lips. Peter glared at his surly teacher and pushed him away.
“Can you please explain to me what the point of that was?”
“Control,” the older man answered. “An’ we just proved you got none. Can’t even walk through a house without drawin’ attention to yourself.”
“I’m not hanging around you to learn how to be a thief or some invisible spirit to haunt people,” Peter snapped irritably. “I’m around you so I can control my abilities.”
“Right,” Claude agreed. “An’ you’ve got none. Now let’s try again an’ this time, remember to put less weight on your feet.” He grabbed Peter to drag him off to another apartment but Peter pulled out of his grip.
“No! Sneaking around people’s houses is just… wrong. I’d rather go back to you beating me with a stick.” Claude blinked at the empath; clearly he hadn’t expected that response. Slowly the surprise morphed into a smile of amusement.
“Well, then, I won’t deny you that.”
“Ugh,” Peter snorted, shaking his head. “You are such a pervert.”
“I didn’t say nothin’,” Claude insisted. But now Peter was the one with the amused smile, and all Claude could do about it was glare.
