Etc: Coupling

“There is nothing going on here.”

That was the conclusion Dr. Saunders gave after studying Kilo’s behavior for a few days. She passed along the information to Adelle, who seemed dubious but eventually accepted the doctor’s decision.

Dr. Saunders first became aware of the situation during her last examination of Kilo. He just came back from a physically demanding engagement and as the House’s doctor, it was Saunders’s job to make sure he was all right. As always she deemed him healthy. It was strange, but Kilo never seemed to sustain any injuries when he went out on engagements.

Kilo appeared distracted and Saunders couldn’t help but ask him: “Is something wrong?”

“I’m looking for Quebec,” Kilo answered.

“Quebec?” the doctor echoed.

“Quebec is my friend,” Kilo explained. “He’s very special to me.” The way he said that seemed strange… A little too much like how Victor spoke of Sierra.

“You may go, Kilo,” Dr. Saunders told him. She handed him a lollipop. He murmured something about her being nice and wandered away with the candy.

Dr. Saunders kept a close eye on the Doll. He made a beeline to one of the other Dolls. The doctor noticed it was Quebec and watched more intently. Kilo sat next to the other Doll and gave him the lollipop.

Coupling wasn’t unheard of in the Dollhouse. Adelle probably liked to pretend it didn’t happen but it was an inevitability. Dr. Saunders already knew about Victor and Sierra but it looked like another one had slipped her notice.

The next day showed her that Kilo and Quebec were almost always together. If one was without the other it was rare. Whenever one was on an engagement the other would stay near the bottom of the stairs near the imprinting room, waiting. Sometimes Kilo went up to the room without being prompted for a treatment by his handler which Saunders found to be very strange.

“Topher?” Kilo poked his head inside the imprinting room. The man appeared and Kilo lit up seeing him.

“Kilo… Ah, you’re not expected for a treatment,” Topher told him with nervous fingers running through his unkempt hair.

“I like seeing you,” Kilo said with a shrug.

“You mean you like your treatments,” Topher corrected him.

“No.” Kilo tilted his head to the side, frowning. “I like you. You and Quebec are both very special to me.” Topher suddenly looked sheepish and Kilo wondered if he said something wrong. “Is it bad to like two people?” he wondered.

“Well, it’s not--” Topher hesitated, and whatever he was going to say was lost. “It’s good to have a lot of friends,” Topher said instead.

“Quebec is more than my friend,” Kilo insisted. “He’s--” And this time his words were the ones to be lost, but only because Dr. Saunders interrupted.

“I would be very interested to know how special Quebec is for you, Kilo,” she said quietly. “Would you like to come back with me?”

“Yes,” the Doll nodded. “Dr. Saunders is nice,” he added to Topher. Topher gave a weak smile in response.

Dr. Saunders performed the same interview with Kilo that she did to Victor not that long ago. The answers forced her to conclude that Kilo and Quebec were coupling. They were experiencing love as much as two blank slates possibly could.

“Kilo,” she said after the interview was over. “I hope you stay happy with Quebec.”

“I would like that,” the Doll responded. “Quebec is the most important.”

“You love him,” the doctor said, almost sadly. There was silence as the word digested in the Doll’s simple mind.

“Yes,” Kilo agreed. “I love him.”
