Peter arrived in the late afternoon. It took him a long time to actually enter the house; he had to make sure that no one was following him. He entered the house, checking all the windows to make sure they were still secure. When he got to the kitchen he saw the refrigerator door open.
“You have nice ankles,” he commented. Elle’s head poked out from behind the door.
“Hey, you,” she greeted him. “I was just getting a snack. You hungry?”
“No, thanks.” She closed the door and Peter felt his stomach drop. Elle was looking bigger, especially around the middle. Peter stared at the bulge knowing what it meant but unable to really process it.
“Peter?” Elle reached out and placed her hand on his arm. Her touch roused him from his daze.
“You’re pregnant,” he croaked out. “Who…” He swallowed hard; he almost didn’t want to ask. “Who is he?”
“No one,” Elle insisted with a shake of her head. Peter touched her growing stomach. It couldn’t be no one. The thought hurt. Someone who was with Elle, who touched her and kissed her. Someone…
Someone who wasn’t him, and the thought hurt worse than anything Peter ever experienced. It didn’t even occur to him that the growing child might be his.
