The future is not set.
I've been told I said that once.
Many years from now.
It was a warning.
That I was going to hell.
But if I fought hard enough, I could escape.
I believed it for a lifetime. -John Connor
You look different without your scar. It was a strange comment to make, and there were so many other things about the conversation that sent Peter’s head spinning that that the scar comment was soon dismissed. It was much more important to save the cheerleader, save the world.
Then Peter saw his future self, and those words came back to him. He really did look different. He acted different, too. His future self seemed colder and more hardened. He shot Nathan twice and didn’t even show remorse! Peter saw the future but there were so many missing pieces. How did all of this happen?
Events might have changed because of his future self’s actions , but none of them in good ways. It was harder for Peter to smile and laugh. He was losing everyone he loved so he slowly withdrew. Peter still fought to save the world: there were so many to save and he couldn’t turn away. But over time all the pain and loss changed something inside him and he was no longer the optimistic dreamer.
Peter woke up after a disturbing nightmare. He went to the sink, splashing his face with cold water. Slowly his eyes lifted to the mirror. Drops of water made their way down his face. He watched, taking in shaky breaths. One drop of water coursed its way diagonally across his nose, marking the path his scar would take in the future.
Claire once said that the future wasn’t written in stone. But maybe there were some things that were destined. Peter wiped his face dry with a towel and turned away from his reflection.
