Realm: A real job

spongetasticThe age of thirteen was set as the milestone in every child's life. Once they passed that marker they were no longer children but teenagers. It meant they were that much closer to becoming an adult. And Peter Petrelli just turned thirteen years old.
His father took the boy aside so they could share in a private conversation. "Peter, now that you're getting older I think it's time you shoulder more responsibility." Peter made a face at the idea. He still had enough child in him to recoil at the idea of responsibility. "I think you need to start looking for part-time jobs."
"A job?" the boy echoed. He really didn't like where this conversation was headed.
"A lot of boys your age start getting jobs," Arthur told him.
"But I already work," the boy protested. He helped out every holiday in homeless shelters and he volunteered around the community whenever he could. Plus there were all the lawns he mowed and dogs he walked.
"I meant a real job," Arthur clarified with a shake of his head. Peter felt a sharp twinge of annoyance. "Something that will make you work hard."
"You don't think I work hard now?" Peter demanded. The annoyance was getting stronger by the minute. His eyes narrowed; he hadn't been a teenager long enough to master the glare.
"That's charity work," Arthur said dismissively. "Not to say that charity isn't admirable in its own right. I'm glad to see you're taking an interest. But honestly, Peter, you should be doing something more with yourself."
"Like you?" Peter demanded heatedly. He was moving on into anger now. True he was still new at being a teenager but he was already seeing his father in a different light.
"Well.... yes," Arthur replied. "For example."
"I don't want to be like you," Peter told him bluntly. He turned away, stomping up to his room and slamming the door closed. His father would probably dismiss it as a teenager's first tantrum, but Peter meant every word.
