Drabble of Summer #6: Part-time Job
Jun. 6th, 2011 07:05 amHe couldn’t help smiling a little as he looked at his reflection. There it was: his name pinned to his chest. He rubbed at it with a sleeve corner hoping to make it shine. A knock at the door jolted him out of his thoughts. Quickly he shoved everything under his pillow.
“Peter?” His mother poked her head in the doorway. “I’ll be going out. Try not to stay inside all day today.”
“I won’t, Mom.” She smiled, giving him an affectionate slap on the cheek and left the room again. Peter let out a sigh of relief. He made sure she was gone before taking out his work clothes again.
Most parents insisted on part-time jobs once summer rolled around, but the ones his mom and dad suggested steered him too close to an unwanted future as a lawyer. Fondly Peter ran his thumb over the letters of his name. This was definitely not a job his parents would encourage but he didn’t care. It was his.
And as long as he was careful, they would never find out. It wasn’t like they ever shopped at Wal-mart, after all.
