Stage: Let go
Jan. 9th, 2010 11:56 amShe took a plane to somewhere out in space
To start a life and maybe change the world
See I never meant for you to have to crawl
No I never meant to let you go at all
The future never seemed very real for Peter. It was some vague thing in the distance that he thought he would never have to worry about. Until it was staring at him right in the face. In this case the future came in the form of letters from colleges telling him whether he was accepted or not. Peter started piling them out, nervous about what they might say. Worried about where he might go from here.
Not just worried for his own sake, but for his girlfriend’s as well. Peter never expected to actually have one, let alone one he loved this much. He couldn’t imagine spending the next four years without Amara but one of those college letters might tell him he had no choice.
On their next date both teenagers were quiet. Peter wanted to ask Amara how her college applications were going, but if he did she would ask him the same thing. The subject hovered, waiting for an opportunity.
“Peter…” Amara’s bright blue eyes focused on the other teen. He swallowed, meeting those orbs nervously. He could tell what was coming before the girl even spoke. “I got a letter in the mail today from a college,” she told him.
“Yeah, I’ve gotten a few of those,” Peter nodded. He didn’t want to say it but the words popped out anyway: “I got accepted into a medical program for nursing.”
“Peter, that’s wonderful! You would make a great nurse!” She leaned forward to give him a congratulatory kiss. “I was accepted into the school I wanted, too,” Amara added. Her smile faded slightly on her lips. Peter felt his heart sink.
“It’s not in New York,” he said heavily. Amara shook her head as answer. Peter’s heart sank even farther. He had a horrible feeling he would get that answer, but having those fears confirmed…
Peter loved Amara from the moment he met her. Every first he could experience with a girl was with her. He hadn’t thought much about their future but this definitely wasn’t where he saw things going. On the outside he smiled and congratulated her, but inside he felt like he was being broken into pieces.
Amara was leaving him. A part of him wanted to jump on a plane with her, or beg her to stay in New York with him. But his dream and hers were too different. The more Peter thought about it the more he knew what he had to do.
The two of them stood in the airport waiting for Amara’s flight to be called. Peter clung onto the girl’s hand. It was going to be hard for him to let go but he would when the time came. Everything happened way too fast for Peter. Watching Amara’s things disappear slowly from her room as the suitcases piled up only made the eventual move that much more real for Peter.
“Attention, passengers. We will begin boarding now.”
“Well…” Peter swallowed, turning to face Amara. “I guess you’d better go.”
“Yeah.” Her eyes fixed on Peter, mesmerizing him as she always did. Peter leaned in, cupping her face tenderly in his hands and kissing her deeply. Somehow he knew this would be the last time he would ever hold her like this.
For a moment Peter hesitated. But then he remembered the joy radiating in Amara’s eyes when she learned she was going to her dream college. Peter let her go, standing to watch until her plane was off the ground.
It hurt a lot to see her go, but she would be happy. That was all Peter wanted, in the end.
