A groan escaped him as he flopped tiredly on the bed. The moment he hit the mattress he decided he was going to stay here for the rest of his life. Or at least for the rest of the day, which might end up being the same thing.

The knock at his door was like the banging of a judge’s gavel.

“Peter?” He groaned into his sheets. The voice on the other side of the door wasn’t his father’s, but it might as well have been. “Peter,” Nathan’s voice tried again. “You can’t stay in there forever.”

“Watch me,” Peter retorted.

“Peter, it’s just going to get worse,” Nathan told him patiently. Peter made a muffled reply. He heard the doorknob rattle as his brother tried to get in. “Unlock the door, Pete.”

“No.”

“Peter…”

“NO!”

“Fine,” Nathan sighed. “But you know, facing Dad is going to be a lot worse.” Peter didn’t answer this time, but he knew Nathan was right. Still… he couldn’t. Not after what happened.

Peter knew enough about law from his father and brother to know that the evidence against him wasn’t good. They had testimony from his teacher as well as physical proof that Peter cheated on that Chemistry test. He wasn’t sure yet whether Nathan was working for the prosecution or the defense. Until he knew, he wasn’t coming out of his room.

And if the verdict was as bad as he dreaded, he might as well start writing his will.
