The routine played itself out so often that when it didn’t Peter felt uneasy. He would pace restlessly around his cell and keep tabs on the windows. Then when Elle finally showed up he would pretend he hadn’t felt anxious.
“You know we have cameras, right?” Elle mentioned.
“Oh, yeah?” Peter couldn’t help the playful smile that pulled on his mouth. “Do you like watching me?”
“I do,” she answered, and kissed him on the forehead. “Especially when you’re waiting for me.”
“I don’t wait for you,” Peter protested. But Elle just laughed, giving him a light shock in his hair before sliding away. And the routine started back to the beginning.
--
Even with his abilities dampened by the Haitian pills, Peter was good at reading people. He couldn’t feel Elle’s emotions but some of them were so clear he could see them. Peter knew he was probably just as obvious.
When Elle got up to leave him for the day Peter followed her to the door. That could be read as him being a gentleman but really he wanted to be near her for a while longer. She tilted her head up, eyes sparkling. Peter could see what she wanted.
He tilted his head down and heard Elle catch her breath in excitement. Biting back a smile, Peter brushed his lips over her nose.
“Is that all?” she huffed.
“You have to go,” he pointed out. He pulled the door open for her. She frowned, walking out of the room and slamming the door shut behind her.
--
“Need any help?” Elle poked her head in, smiling at him. Peter turned at her voice and smiled back.
“I’m almost dressed,” he told her. All he had left was the tie. He looped it around his neck and Elle stepped forward to help him. “Elle, I can do it myself,” Peter said patiently.
“I know.” But she started knotting his tie anyway, and Peter didn’t try to stop her. “You look good,” Elle smiled. She kissed him on the cheek. “Have a good day at work, sweetie.” She meant it playfully but the words could be so much more.
--
He was supposed to report to Bob first whenever he came back from assignment. But Peter wasn’t planning on doing what he was supposed to today. Once he put the bag-and-tag away he went out to search for someone.
“There you are,” he said, reaching out to take Elle by the arm and pulling her into a corner.
“Hey, you.” She grinned at him. “Just get back?”
“I couldn’t wait to see you,” Peter told her. Before she could say anything he had his lips on hers, kissing her like he hadn’t seen her in weeks. It took her a few seconds before she started responding.
“Wow,” she breathed out when it was over. “What was that for?”
“Just happy to see you,” he answered.
