If I could read your mind,
Girl would I find, any trace of me at all

Peter hesitated for a long time at the front door. He hadn’t been back here in months. Not by choice by any means. Yet as anxious as he was to be back, he hesitated. Peter took a deep breath and knocked. It felt like forever before the door opened.

“Peter!” Elle stared at him in surprise from the other side of the door. Peter was even more surprised when he saw her.

“You’re pregnant.” It sounded stupid but her condition was hard to miss.

“Ahh, yeah.” She rested her hand on her swollen belly. “I’m about three months along.” Peter stared at her, his mouth suddenly dry. “Come inside,” Elle urged, stepping aside for him. Peter numbly obeyed. He couldn’t stop staring at Elle.

“So…” Peter tried clearing his throat. He wanted to ask her, but he wasn’t sure how to go about it. Eventually he focused on something completely different: “The house looks nice.”

“Thanks.” They stood together awkwardly for a few moments.

“You should keep off your feet,” Peter mentioned.

“Right,” Elle agreed. She made her way to the couch and after some hesitation Peter followed her.

The last time the two of them sat together on the couch was a little over three months ago. Peter couldn’t help thinking of it now. He was itching to listen in on Elle’s thoughts to find out if she was thinking about it, too. But he didn’t want to invade her privacy like that.

“I’m really glad to see you again,” Elle spoke up. “When I didn’t hear from you, I thought…” She paused to take a deep breath. “I thought you weren’t coming back.”

“It wasn’t my choice to be away for so long,” Peter assured her. He wanted to take her in his arms or even do something as simple as kiss her. But he’d been gone for the past three months, and he had no idea what he missed.

“Will you be staying for a while?” Elle wondered.

“Yeah. For a while.”

The awkward tone hung in the air. It seemed much easier the last time he was here. There was adrenaline, and fear, and intense love. Of course the love was still there for him but Elle spent the last three months without him. Plus she was pregnant. Seeing her like that made Peter feel hurt and angry, and very jealous.

Who was it? Peter wondered. Did you love him? He didn’t want to hope that it could be… No. They talked about ordinary things: what Elle did with her time, her health, finances, and other boring subjects that kept them away from what was weighing on them.

“I’ve been doing really well,” Elle concluded. She didn’t have to say it, but the implication was clear: Without you.

“That’s great.” Peter stayed for dinner. He insisted on cooking and didn’t even flinch from Elle’s bizarre food requests. He was willing to cook anything she asked for. He would do anything for her, because he still loved her.

Peter spent the night on the couch. He stared up at the ceiling thinking about Elle. He hadn’t stopped thinking about her for three months.

If I could be your superman,
I'd fly you to the stars and back again
