Introduce yourself to ....yourself, or someone very like you. Time paradox? What's that? Maybe you'll find out!
Five years seemed like such a short amount of time. But somehow in that short amount of time, Peter changed so much he was almost a completely different person. Different enough for him to hardly recognize himself. Even sitting here, Peter could think of his companion as someone else.
“Rooftops play a big part in our lives, don’t they?” he observed.
“Yeah.” So it looked like his verbal skills hadn’t improved in five years. “It’s nice up here,” the older Peter added after a moment of silence. “It’s easier to think, and it’s more private for talking.”
“I’ve grown to like the open air after spending all that time with Sylar,” Peter mentioned. He glanced over to his older self to see the reaction. “Do you remember feeling like that?”
“I never spent too much time with Sylar,” the older Peter answered simply. “Though I do spend it with other people.”
“Other people,” Peter echoed. “What other people?” His older self smiled-- it was a relief to know that he would still be able to do that five years from now-- but he didn’t answer. “You’re not going to tell me, are you?” Peter sighed.
“Do you really want me to, Peter?” the older one asked, the smile growing wider.
Peter thought about it. The last time his older self changed the past, nothing went right. Nathan was shot, Peter was trapped in Level Five, Elle and Claire were attacked…
“No,” Peter decided. “I don’t want to know. At least until it’s time to find out.”
“That’s wise,” the older Peter nodded. Silence fell again. Peter took a deep breath. This was peaceful. His older self was right: it was easier to think up here.
“Do you have someone waiting for you?” Peter asked casually. To his surprise, that got his older self to laugh. Peter found himself smiling. “It’s good to know we still do that in the future.”
“And more than that,” his older self added, “but you’ll just have to wait.”
“Fine.” Peter pushed his hair out of his face. “Thanks.”
“Anytime.” Present and future smiled together, and for the first time Peter recognized himself in the older man.
